The Wasteland is all that isn't Haven City, the desert is just a small part of it. If you are banished to here and if then he was rescued by Damas the king of Spargus City which is a desert city built by people who were left in the desert like Jak, you will go test your abilities at the Arena. Outside Spargus City is just countless miles of desert where desperate Marauders salvage the desert for anything they can find. The desert also gets massive sand storms where anyone that gets stuck in them will be doomed.

The Wasteland his full of creatures like Metal Heads and they Nests, like the Metal Heads Cave, the biggest one is the main Nest, where you can find they're Lider; you can find the Nest near the Icelands, that in Times the Nest was Misty Island.
